With the most promising prospects, a moment will come—ideally before you write the proposal—when you will talk about actual numbers. You should have a strong indication that the project, client and budget are a good fit before you put pen to paper. Many creative professionals skip this step completely, instead going directly to writing a full-length proposal.

If you skip the initial money discussion, there may be a price to pay: time wasted on proposals you lose because your price was too high and because you didn't bring it up earlier.
